Morocco’s Atlas Lions A’ roared back into contention at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Thursday night, defeating Zambia 3-1 at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium. The result came just days after their shock 1-0 loss to Kenya, a setback that had put their quarter-final hopes in jeopardy.
With this victory, Morocco not only steadied their campaign but also positioned themselves firmly in the race for a spot in the last eight.
Resilience at the Core of the Win
Head coach Tarik Sektioui could not hide his pride after the match, hailing the mental strength and professionalism of his players in overcoming what he called a “complicated situation.”
“We have an admirable squad that I salute for their professionalism and mental strength,” Sektioui told reporters. “Despite the lack of preparation, they responded to the call for CHAN. We now have six points, and the level they’ve shown makes me proud.”
The coach stressed that the match was more than just about the points — it was proof of the squad’s ability to respond under pressure.

“In times of difficulty, they have shown themselves to be great. Psychologically and mentally, they stood tall,” he added.
Overcoming a Dangerous Zambia
Despite Zambia coming into the match after two consecutive defeats, Sektioui warned his side against complacency.
“It was not easy to play against a team desperate to react after two losses,” he explained. “We expected a fight. Our tactical discipline and technical quality helped us manage the game, even though we missed many opportunities.”

Morocco’s goals came from Mohamed Hrimat, Oussama Lamlaoui, and Sabir Bougrine, with the defence holding firm despite Zambia’s spirited attacks.
Mental Strength Seals the Deal
Sektioui credited the team’s mindset as the decisive factor in the win.
“The players were mentally strong and managed this match well. We started and finished strongly, which was crucial,” he noted. “Zambia’s attacking team was dangerous, but our tactical discipline and individual qualities made the difference.”
While Morocco squandered several chances, the coach pointed out that their attacking efficiency in the final third had improved since the Kenya defeat.
Eyes on the Decisive DR Congo Clash
With six points from three games, Morocco now face DR Congo in a decisive group-stage finale. Both teams are level on points, setting up what promises to be a tense battle.
“It’s simple we have to win this match,” Sektioui said. “The work starts tomorrow because time is short.”
A win against DR Congo would almost certainly secure a prime quarter-final spot. However, Kenya’s simultaneous match against Zambia could also play a role in determining the final group standings.
A Statement with Caution
This 3-1 win was a statement of Morocco’s intent in the tournament. Yet, it also served as a reminder that CHAN’s fine margins can quickly change fortunes. Against Zambia, the Atlas Lions blended tactical awareness, mental resilience, and a diversified attack. Against DR Congo, the stakes and the pressure will be even higher.
For now, Morocco have reignited their campaign, showing that when challenged, they are ready to answer the call.
