The Announcement of Judge Caprio’s death

From Federal Hill to the Bench

Caprio grew up on Federal Hill in Providence, the second of three sons in a working-class family. As a boy, he shined shoes, delivered newspapers, and worked on a milk truck, jobs that instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep respect for community.

He attended Central High School before earning a bachelor’s degree at Providence College. While teaching American Government at Hope High School, Caprio pursued his law degree at Suffolk University School of Law in Boston by attending night classes. That determination led him into the legal profession and, eventually, the judiciary.

A Judge with Heart

Caprio was elected judge in 1985 and quickly became known for his unique style on the bench. His television series Caught in Providence brought his courtroom to living rooms around the globe. Nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 2021, the show highlighted Caprio’s mix of firmness, fairness, and empathy.

Clips of Caprio dismissing traffic tickets when defendants shared heartfelt personal stories often went viral. His ability to blend justice with compassion made him a beloved figure, not just in Rhode Island, but internationally.

“I don’t wear this robe to punish people,” Caprio once said. “I wear it to try to help them.”

Contributions Beyond the Courtroom

Caprio also left a lasting impact on education and public service. He spent a decade as chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, overseeing the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island.

At Suffolk University, he established the Antonio “Tup” Caprio Scholarship Fund in honor of his father, supporting Rhode Island students committed to serving underserved communities. Similar scholarships were also set up at Providence College and Central High School, ensuring his commitment to education lives on.

Retirement and Final Battle

After nearly four decades on the bench, Caprio announced his retirement in January 2023. Later that year, Providence honored him by renaming its municipal courtroom after him.

In December 2023, shortly after his 87th birthday, Caprio shared that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He underwent treatment, completing his last radiation session in May 2024. Just days before his passing, Caprio posted a video from his hospital bed, humbly asking the public for prayers.

Remembered as a Rhode Island Treasure

Gov. Dan McKee ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at all state agencies and buildings until Caprio’s burial. “Judge Caprio was a Rhode Island treasure,” McKee said. “His compassion in the courtroom showed us that justice can be kind. His memory will continue to inspire us all.”

Caprio is survived by his wife, Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

As one Providence resident reflected outside City Hall, “He showed the world that even a traffic court judge could change lives. That’s what makes him unforgettable.”
