Ghanaian journalist Godwin Asediba has been named the winner of the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award, earning a three-month placement with BBC News teams in London. The award provides Asediba with hands-on experience across television, radio, and online platforms, along with mentorship and professional development opportunities.

Honouring a Legacy

Established in 2015, the Komla Dumor Award celebrates the legacy of Ghanaian broadcaster and BBC journalist Komla Dumor, renowned for his exceptional storytelling and dedication to presenting African stories with authenticity and depth. The award supports outstanding African journalists and highlights the continent’s talent on a global stage.

Asediba’s work has impressed judges for its investigative rigor and commitment to journalistic integrity. Speaking on his achievement, he said: “The Komla Dumor Award is more than a personal milestone. It is a call to carry forward the spirit of journalism that informs, inspires, and transforms. Komla’s legacy reminds us that African stories deserve to be told with depth, dignity, and a fearless commitment to truth. This recognition strengthens my resolve to shine a light on issues that matter and to amplify voices that too often go unheard.”

A Decade of Impact

The Komla Dumor Award has produced a number of distinguished journalists across Africa. Past recipients include Waihiga Mwaura, lead presenter for BBC News’ Focus on Africa; Nancy Kacungira, BBC News presenter; Victoria Rubadiri, CNN International’s Connecting Africa correspondent; Solomon Serwanjja, executive director of the African Institute for Investigative Journalism; Paa Kwesi Asare, journalist and anchor at TV3 Ghana; and Rukia Bulle of Kenya’s NTV.

Alice Muthengi, Komla Dumor Award Director, reflected on the award’s significance: “One of the most gratifying aspects of this journey has been witnessing the genuine joy and astonishment on the faces of the winners upon learning of their success. Over the years, the award has consistently attracted a remarkable calibre of journalistic talent. It has been deeply rewarding to see the prestige the award has garnered and to amplify the voices and work of outstanding African journalists to a broader international audience.”

Asediba will join BBC teams in London for three months, gaining exposure to international journalism standards while bringing African perspectives to a global audience. Observers see his win as a promising step in continuing Komla Dumor’s mission to elevate African stories on the world stage.
