Ghanaian dancehall heavyweight Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr, better known as Shatta Wale, has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra as part of a high-profile tax investigation linked to his yellow Lamborghini.
Voluntary Appearance Turns Into Detention
Shatta Wale voluntarily reported to EOCO headquarters on Wednesday morning to assist with inquiries. However, investigators decided to hold him for further questioning over concerns tied to tax obligations on the luxury vehicle.
His lawyer, Cephas Biyuo, and manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah (Sammy Flex), confirmed the detention and stressed that the team is working closely with authorities.
“His legal team is fully engaged and actively working with the authorities to resolve this matter,” his management said in a statement. “Steps are already under way to secure his release at the earliest opportunity.”
Shatta Wale Responds Through Lawyer
Through his legal counsel, Shatta Wale maintained his innocence. “I respect the process. I have documentation on the vehicle. I trust this clears my name,” he said.
The legal team is expected to return to EOCO on Thursday to continue discussions.
The detention has sparked national debate in Ghana and caught the attention of international observers. It underscores the increasing scrutiny on high-value asset acquisitions and tax compliance among public figures in West Africa.

Lamborghini Already Under Scrutiny
This is not the first time the luxury car has drawn investigators’ attention. In June 2025, EOCO seized Shatta Wale’s 2019 Lamborghini Urus following a request from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI had connected the vehicle to a wider international fraud and money laundering investigation.
At the time, Shatta Wale denied any involvement, saying he purchased the car for US$150,000 in good faith.
The coming days will be critical in determining whether the case remains a tax matter or expands into broader financial investigations.
