A devastating bus accident in the capital city of Algiers claimed the lives of at least 18 people and left nine others injured on Friday afternoon, according to Algerian civil protection authorities. The crash occurred in the Mohammadia district near Oued El Harrach, when a passenger bus skidded off a bridge and plunged into a wadi.
Tragedy in the Heart of the Capital
The incident unfolded late Friday as the vehicle lost control, sending shockwaves across the city. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, pulling survivors and victims from the wreckage. Authorities confirmed that nine people were hospitalized, two of whom remain in critical condition.

“The toll is heavy, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of this terrible accident,” a civil protection spokesperson said.
Cause Still Under Investigation
While officials have not yet released details on what caused the crash, road safety remains a major concern in Algeria. Accidents involving public transport have frequently raised alarm, with citizens calling for stricter safety regulations and better infrastructure maintenance.
Arab Parliament Extends Condolences
The tragedy has drawn regional attention. On Saturday, Mohamed Ahmed Alyammahi, President of the Arab Parliament, extended his condolences to Algeria’s leadership and its people.
In his message, Alyammahi expressed “the solidarity of the Arab Parliament with Algeria in this painful ordeal, imploring Almighty Allah to surround the deceased with His holy mercy and to grant their families and loved ones patience and comfort.”

A Nation in Mourning
For the families of the victims, the loss is immeasurable. Algerians have taken to social media to express grief and solidarity, with many urging the government to take stronger steps to ensure passenger safety on public roads.
“This is not just an accident, it is a wake-up call,” said one local resident near Mohammadia. “We need safer buses, better drivers, and roads that protect people, not put them at risk.”
As Algeria grieves, investigations into the crash continue. The government is expected to announce further measures once the full circumstances are understood. In the meantime, families of the victims and survivors face the painful task of healing and rebuilding their lives after one of the country’s deadliest transport accidents in recent months.
