A devastating train derailment near Stuttgart has left at least three people dead and several others critically injured, shaking communities across southwest Germany and prompting national mourning.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening around 18:10 local time (GMT +2), when a regional passenger train operated by Deutsche Bahn derailed near Riedlingen, a forested area roughly 100 kilometres south of Stuttgart. According to initial reports, the train had been travelling between Sigmaringen and Ulm, a 90-kilometre route, when two carriages veered off the tracks. The cause of the crash remains unclear, though witnesses reported stormy weather in the area just before the derailment.
Emergency services swiftly mobilized to the remote crash site, where they faced challenging conditions due to downed trees and dense woodland. Photographs from the scene show carriages overturned on their sides, as firefighters and medics worked tirelessly to reach trapped passengers.
Authorities confirmed that roughly 100 people were on board at the time of the incident.
“Three people were killed and other passengers were seriously injured,” Ulm police said in a statement. “Our investigators are working around the clock to understand what caused this tragedy.”

Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “I mourn the victims of this tragic event and extend my deepest sympathy to their families.” He added that he is in close contact with Interior and Transport Ministers to ensure emergency responders have the support they need.
