Enough Is Enough": Liberians Demand Justice, Jobs, and Accountability in Major Protest 3

Hundreds of Liberians took to the streets of Monrovia on Thursday in a large-scale protest demanding justice, employment, and government accountability. Chanting “enough is enough,” demonstrators criticized President Joseph Boakai’s administration for unmet campaign promises, rising unemployment, and the delay in establishing a war crimes court.

The protest, led by opposition leader Mulbah Morlu, marks the largest public outcry since Boakai assumed office last year. Protesters expressed frustration over politically motivated firings, economic hardship, and the government’s failure to deliver on promises of reform and improved living conditions.

“I am in the street to remind my government of their past promises,” said Victoria Roberts, a local businesswoman. “How can you say you came to better lives but take people off jobs?”

A central demand was justice for victims of Liberia’s civil wars (1989–2003), with many calling for the long-delayed creation of a war crimes tribunal. Protesters specifically named ex-warlords like Prince Johnson and Joshua Milton Blahyi, also known as “General Butt Naked,” as figures who must face justice.

President Boakai, who campaigned on a platform of integrity and reform, is under pressure to act swiftly. His office has not yet commented on the protest.

Despite the large turnout, the demonstration remained peaceful, though the streets of Monrovia were unusually subdued, with many residents staying home due to fears of unrest.
