Cape Town Crowned World’s Best City for the 7th Time in a Row

Published:

Cape Town has once again been voted the Best City in the World by readers of the Telegraph newspaper, marking the seventh consecutive year the South African coastal gem has claimed the top spot in the prestigious Telegraph Travel Awards.

The results, revealed on Saturday, were based on responses from over 20,000 international travellers, who placed Cape Town ahead of Seville (Spain) and Sydney (Australia), which ranked second and third respectively.

A City of Photogenic Power and Endless Experiences

According to The Telegraph, Cape Town’s enduring appeal lies in its breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant culture, and rich variety of attractions. The newspaper highlighted the city’s “photogenic power”, with landmarks such as the iconic Table Mountain, the cable car rides, and the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront continuing to captivate visitors from around the world.

“Cape Town isn’t just beautiful, it’s magnetic,” said Telegraph travel editor Joanna Symons. “Whether you’re sipping wine in the Cape Winelands or walking with penguins on Boulders Beach, there’s a sense of wonder you can’t quite replicate anywhere else.”

A Global Favourite Backed by the Numbers

Cape Town’s reign as a top global destination is not just anecdotal. In 2024, the city’s international airport welcomed a record 10.4 million passengers, a clear signal of its surging popularity among global tourists.

The city was also named the best city in the world by Time Out magazine earlier this year, which surveyed both travel experts and regular visitors. This growing global recognition underscores the Mother City’s unique blend of adventure, heritage, and world-class hospitality.

Cultural Richness and Natural Wonders

In addition to its scenic coastline and mountainous landscapes, Cape Town offers a deep dive into South Africa’s diverse cultures, historical landmarks, and culinary excellence. Visitors can enjoy wine safaris in the Cape Winelands, explore unique Cape Dutch architecture, or visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

Local tourism stakeholders see the recognition as a testament to years of investment in infrastructure, hospitality, and conservation.

“This title means the world to us,” said Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy. “It shows the world is responding to our efforts to make Cape Town not just a stunning destination, but a welcoming and sustainable one too.”

What’s Next for Cape Town?

While the accolades are worth celebrating, city officials and tourism leaders say they are focused on sustaining Cape Town’s growth responsibly, ensuring future visitors experience the same charm and hospitality that keeps bringing people back.

Looking ahead, Cape Town continues to expand its tourism offerings, with renewed focus on eco-tourism, local arts, and community-led experiences that highlight the city’s soul as much as its scenery.

From adventure seekers and nature lovers to foodies and history buffs, Cape Town is showing the world—year after year—that it’s more than just a beautiful city. It’s a destination with heart.

Other cities in the top ten included:
