Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has insisted that the club’s Premier League title celebrations will not be dampened by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shock announcement that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old right-back, who has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success over the past seven years, confirmed last week that he will depart when his contract expires in June — with Real Madrid expected to secure his signature. His decision has stirred mixed emotions among fans, with some supporters booing him during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal, his first appearance since revealing his planned exit.

Despite the controversy, Van Dijk remains upbeat. Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s final home game on 25 May, where they will lift their record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, the Dutch team defender promised a celebration to remember.

“We want to win two more games and after the final whistle, including him [Alexander-Arnold], lift the trophy up and celebrate like we have never done before,” said Van Dijk, 33.

The celebrations will include an open-top bus parade through Liverpool on 26 May, ensuring Alexander-Arnold, a boyhood Red, gets the send-off his contributions deserve.

Dealing With the Boo Boys

Van Dijk acknowledged the uncomfortable reception Alexander-Arnold received at Anfield but urged both the player and the team to move forward.

“He has to deal with it. We as a team have to deal with that as well… We’re here for him anyway,” Van Dijk said.
“We are gutted that he’s not here with us next year because he’s a fantastic player with outstanding, exceptional qualities.”

His teammate Andy Robertson echoed similar sentiments, describing the boos as “not nice”
