Catholics across Ivory Coast are expressing happiness and hope following the election of Pope Leo XIV, even though many had hoped for the Church’s first African pope. At St. John’s Catholic Church in Abidjan, the faithful gathered on Thursday evening to pray as the world awaited the outcome of the Vatican conclave.
The announcement came during the service: American Robert Prevost had been chosen as Pope Leo XIV, marking a historic milestone as the first pope from the United States in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
“We Pray for the New Pope,” Say Church Leaders
Hervé Djezou Konan, a priest and head of communications for the Catholic Church in Ivory Coast, shared the nation’s sentiment:
“We are very happy here in Ivory Coast, and we pray for the new pope, Pope Leo XIV.”
His words echoed the mood of gratitude and optimism that filled the church, despite the initial disappointment that no African cardinal was elected.
Faith Over Disappointment: Trusting in New Leadership
Clementin Zongo, a devout Catholic who attended the prayer service, expressed her faith in the new pope’s leadership.
“All I hope is that this new pope we’ve been given will be a model pastor, and that the Holy Spirit will always be with him in his discernment and decision-making,” she said.
Her message reflects the larger African Catholic community’s resilience and faith in the Church’s global mission, even as they continue to hope for representation at the highest level.
