India’s growing importance in the global artificial intelligence landscape, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday that the company will open its first office in India later this year. The announcement marks a strategic milestone as India rapidly emerges as one of the largest markets for AI adoption.
Altman shared the news in a post on X, adding that he would personally visit India in September to meet stakeholders and review OpenAI’s expansion plans.

“We are opening our first office in India later this year! And I’m looking forward to visiting next month,” Altman wrote, highlighting India’s accelerating role in OpenAI’s global vision.
ChatGPT’s Rapid Growth in India
According to company data, ChatGPT’s user base in India has grown fourfold over the past year, making the country OpenAI’s second-largest market. This surge in adoption played a key role in the decision to set up a physical presence.
“AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch. ChatGPT users grew 4x in the past year, and we are excited to invest much more in India,” Altman added.
The expansion follows the launch of ChatGPT Go, a low-cost plan priced at ₹399, aimed at making advanced AI more affordable for Indian users while offering higher usage limits.
Delhi Office: A Hub for Collaboration

Reports suggest that OpenAI’s upcoming Delhi office will serve as a central hub to engage with governments, developers, businesses, universities, and policymakers. The goal: to help build an AI ecosystem designed to meet India’s specific needs.
“India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader, amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission,” Altman said in an official statement.
“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country, to build AI for India, and with India.”
Why OpenAI’s India Move Is a Game-Changer
Industry experts believe the Delhi office will allow OpenAI to better respond to India’s expanding user base while also aligning with the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which promotes innovation, research, and ethical AI deployment. With India positioning itself as both a massive consumer market and a hub of technical expertise, OpenAI’s move is seen as a decisive step in strengthening its global influence.
What’s Next for OpenAI and India’s AI Future
Altman’s upcoming September visit is expected to deepen dialogue with India’s technology leaders and policymakers, setting the stage for partnerships that could shape the global future of artificial intelligence.
As OpenAI prepares to establish roots in India, the company is signaling that it sees the country not only as a vital market but also as a partner in co-creating the next era of AI innovation.
